In the bloodstream, uric acid can contribute to urate crystal formation in and around joints when conditions favor crystallization. In the urinary tract, stone formation depends on the chemistry and concentration of urine.
For uric acid stones, urine acidity is especially important. Uric acid is less soluble in persistently acidic urine, so it can crystallize more readily. Low urine volume can also concentrate stone-forming substances. These mechanisms are related to, but distinct from, the process that produces a gout flare in a joint. A blood uric acid result therefore cannot reveal stone composition on its own.

In the stone-composition analysis, uric acid made up a larger share of stones in the gout group than in the comparison group. However, the researchers reported that 48 percent of participants with gout had stones that were not pure uric acid.
That finding is useful because it challenges a common shortcut: assuming that every kidney stone in someone with gout must be a uric acid stone. The study was retrospective and came from a stone registry, so it cannot predict one individual's stone type or prove a simple cause-and-effect pathway. It does support the practical value of identifying the stone rather than guessing from a gout history.
Symptoms that point to the urinary tract, not a joint
A gout flare commonly involves sudden joint pain, swelling, warmth, and tenderness. Kidney stone symptoms usually follow a different pattern. According to NIDDK, possible symptoms include sharp pain in the back, side, lower abdomen, or groin; pink, red, or brown urine; pain during urination; a frequent need to urinate; cloudy or bad-smelling urine; nausea; or vomiting. Pain may come and go in waves as a stone moves.
Fever, chills, an inability to urinate, very little urine, severe pain, or blood in the urine deserve prompt medical attention. Those features may occur with a stone or another condition, and infection or urinary blockage can become urgent. Prevention guidance is not identical for every kidney stone. NIDDK advises people who have had a stone to ask which type it was because food and fluid guidance can differ by composition and health context. General information about uric acid stones often discusses urine acidity, urine volume, animal-protein intake, and overall dietary pattern. Calcium-based stones raise additional questions about sodium, calcium, and oxalate.
For many adults without a fluid restriction, drinking enough liquid to avoid chronically concentrated urine is a common kidney-stone prevention principle. But a universal fluid target is not appropriate for everyone. Heart failure, kidney failure, certain medicines, and other conditions can change what is safe. Gout and kidney stones can share uric acid-related risk, and people with gout may be more likely to form stones. Still, gout does not establish that flank pain is a kidney stone, and it does not establish that a confirmed stone is made of uric acid.
