A medium-length nap may provide more total sleep and may support some aspects of mood or memory. The trade-off is a greater possibility of sleep inertia immediately after waking. Study results also vary by outcome: a nap that improves subjective sleepiness may not improve every measure of attention, processing speed, or memory. Leaving a buffer after waking is more realistic than assuming alertness will return instantly.

A 90-minute nap is sometimes described as a full sleep cycle, but sleep cycles are not identical timers. Their length and composition vary across people and across the night or day. A longer nap may be relevant in some shift-work or severe sleep-loss situations, yet it takes more time, can produce grogginess, and may affect the ability to sleep later.
